For 2027 entry, Oxford and Cambridge both use the TMUA for maths and computer science, the ESAT for engineering and physical sciences, the LNAT for law and the UCAT for medicine. Oxford also uses the TARA for PPE, psychology and several joint courses, while Cambridge uses the TMUA for economics and sets college assessments at interview for many arts and social science subjects.
Oxford admissions tests for 2027 entry
From 2026, Oxford uses the UAT-UK tests (ESAT, TARA and TMUA) alongside the LNAT and UCAT. This is the full list of courses with a test, with the modules each course page asks for. Everyone applying by the 15 October UCAS deadline must take the October sitting.
| Course | Test | What you sit |
|---|---|---|
| Biomedical Sciences | ESAT | Maths 1 + any two of Biology, Chemistry, Maths 2, Physics |
| Engineering Science (all its engineering options) | ESAT | Maths 1, Maths 2, Physics |
| Physics | ESAT | Maths 1, Maths 2, Physics |
| Physics and Philosophy | ESAT | Maths 1, Maths 2, Physics |
| Computer Science | TMUA | Paper 1 and Paper 2 |
| Computer Science and Philosophy | TMUA | Paper 1 and Paper 2 |
| Mathematics / Mathematics and Statistics | TMUA | Paper 1 and Paper 2 |
| Mathematics and Computer Science | TMUA | Paper 1 and Paper 2 |
| Mathematics and Philosophy | TMUA | Paper 1 and Paper 2 |
| Economics and Management | TARA | Critical Thinking and Problem Solving; Writing Task only if another TARA course needs it |
| History and Economics | TARA | As Economics and Management; written work too |
| History and Politics | TARA | All three modules; written work too |
| Human Sciences | TARA | All three modules |
| Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) | TARA | All three modules |
| Psychology (Experimental) | TARA | All three modules |
| Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics | TARA | All three modules |
| Law (Jurisprudence) | LNAT | Register by 15 Sept; sit 1 Sept–15 Oct 2026 |
| Medicine and Graduate-entry Medicine | UCAT | Sit 13 July–24 Sept 2026 |
The TARA note matters. For Economics and Management and for History and Economics, Oxford says applicants applying only to Oxford, and to no other course that requires the TARA, do not need to complete the Writing Task. They can finish after the Critical Thinking and Problem Solving modules. Every other Oxford TARA course needs all three. On Law with Law Studies in Europe, shortlisted applicants for the French, German, Italian or Spanish options usually have an oral language test at interview.
Three Astrophoria Foundation Year courses also have tests: Engineering Science with Foundation Year (ESAT) and PPE with Foundation Year (TARA), which can be taken in October 2026 or January 2027, and Law with Foundation Year (LNAT), which you must sit by 13 January 2027.
Oxford courses with no admissions test
Any Oxford course missing from the table above has no admissions test for 2027 entry. History's page, for example, says you do not need to take a written test. Many of these courses ask for written work instead, which must arrive at the college by 10 November.
| What Oxford asks for | Courses |
|---|---|
| Written work | Archaeology and Anthropology; Asian and Middle Eastern Studies; Classical Archaeology and Ancient History; Classics; Classics and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies; Classics and English; Classics and Modern Languages; English and Modern Languages; English Language and Literature; History; History (Ancient and Modern); History and English; History and Modern Languages; History of Art; Philosophy and Theology; Religion and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies; Theology and Religion |
| No written work | Biochemistry; Biology; Chemistry; Earth Sciences (Geology); European and Middle Eastern Languages; Geography; Materials Science; Modern Languages; Modern Languages and Linguistics; Philosophy and Modern Languages |
| Portfolio or performance | Fine Art (portfolio); Music (performance video and written work) |
For language courses there is no pre-interview language test in 2026; shortlisted candidates who are studying the language to A-level or equivalent are assessed on it at interview. Music applicants send a video of up to five minutes of a musical performance.
Cambridge admission assessments for 2027 entry
Cambridge has two kinds of assessment. Pre-registered tests are taken before shortlisting at a test centre near you, and you must book them yourself. College assessments are taken only if you're shortlisted, and you don't need to register for them: the College that interviews you arranges them.
| Course | Test | What you sit |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology | ESAT | Maths 1 + any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths 2 |
| Engineering | ESAT | Maths 1, Maths 2, Physics |
| Natural Sciences | ESAT | Maths 1 + any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths 2 |
| Veterinary Medicine | ESAT | Maths 1 + any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths 2 |
| Computer Science | TMUA | Both papers; Peterhouse and Trinity applicants also take the CSAT |
| Economics | TMUA | Both papers |
| Mathematics | TMUA | Both papers; offers usually also need grade 1 in STEP 2 and 3 |
| Law | LNAT | Register by 15 Sept; sit by 15 Oct 2026 |
| Medicine (A100) and Medicine (Graduate Course) | UCAT | Register by 16 Sept; sit by 24 Sept 2026 |
College admission assessments apply to Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic; Architecture; Asian and Middle Eastern Studies; Classics (3- and 4-year); Design; English; Geography; History; History and Modern Languages; History and Politics; Human, Social, and Political Sciences; Linguistics; Linguistics and Modern Languages; Modern and Medieval Languages; Music; Philosophy; and Psychological and Behavioural Sciences.
Five Cambridge courses have no admission assessment at all: Archaeology; Education; Environment, Law, and Economics (previously Land Economy); History of Art; and Theology, Religion, and Philosophy of Religion.
STEP isn't a shortlisting test, but Cambridge says all Colleges usually include it in Mathematics offers, so it's worth starting early. Our STEP hub has the details.
Key dates for Oxbridge tests (2027 entry)
| Test | Booking deadline | When you sit it | Results |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESAT, TMUA, TARA | 28 Sept 2026, 6pm UK time (now closed) | 12–16 October 2026 | 16 November 2026, in your UAT-UK account |
| LNAT | 15 September 2026 | 1 Sept–15 Oct 2026 | — |
| UCAT | 16 September 2026, 15:00 UK time | 13 July–24 Sept 2026 | Universities receive them in early November |
In China, Hong Kong and Macau the UAT-UK tests have fixed days: Cambridge says the ESAT must be taken on 12 or 13 October and the TMUA on 15 or 16 October, and UAT-UK runs the TARA there on 14 October. For more on sitting abroad, see UK admissions tests for international students. The full timetable is in our UAT-UK test dates guide.
After the tests, Oxford invites shortlisted applicants to online interviews in December 2026 and tells them the outcome on 12 January 2027.
Choosing the right test and modules
- Oxford or Cambridge, not both. Cambridge states that you cannot apply to Cambridge and Oxford in the same year, so you only need to plan for one of the two tables above.
- One test covers several universities. Oxford says applicants also applying to other universities that use the UAT-UK tests only need to take the relevant test once.
- Compulsory ESAT modules win. If one of your courses has a free choice of modules and another has compulsory ones, UAT-UK says the compulsory modules must decide your selection. Modules can't be changed after booking; you would have to cancel and rebook. Cambridge Natural Sciences plus Imperial Physics, for example, means Maths 1, Maths 2 and Physics.
- Writing Task. If you apply to Oxford Economics and Management but also to a UCL course that uses the TARA (where all modules are compulsory), sit all three TARA modules.
- No January safety net. The January sitting is not for Cambridge or Oxford applicants, except Cambridge mature colleges and Oxford Foundation Year courses with January deadlines.

Frequently asked questions
Which admissions test do I need for Cambridge Natural Sciences?
The ESAT. Cambridge asks Natural Sciences applicants for Mathematics 1 plus any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2, taken in the October sitting.
Does Oxford still use the MAT, PAT or TSA?
Not for 2027 entry. None of them is on Oxford's list of admissions tests: maths and computer science courses now use the TMUA, physics and engineering use the ESAT, and PPE and Economics and Management use the TARA. Our MAT page covers the old test.
Is there an admissions test for Cambridge History or English?
Not one you book. Both have a College admission assessment, which you take only if you're shortlisted for interview and don't register for in advance.
Can I take the ESAT or TMUA in January for Oxford or Cambridge?
Usually not. UAT-UK says the January 2027 sitting is not applicable for Cambridge or Oxford applicants unless you're applying to a Cambridge mature college or an Oxford Foundation Year course with a January deadline.
Can I apply to Oxford and Cambridge in the same year?
No. Cambridge states that you cannot apply to Cambridge and Oxford in the same year, so you'll only face one set of tests.
