Published Sources last checked

The GRE General Test fee in India is US$249, the same as everywhere except China, and it's the same whether you test at a centre or at home. ETS charges in US dollars; it doesn't publish a fixed rupee price, but your card issuer may offer to charge you in rupees at checkout.

GRE fee in India for 2026

ETS's fee page for India lists the GRE General Test at US$249, in the "all other areas of the world" line of its table. The page says fees are stated in US dollars, effective 1 August 2026, and ETS's main fee table has only two prices: US$237.86 for China and US$249 for all other areas. So India pays the standard GRE fee. For a side-by-side view of other countries, see our GRE fee by country table.

If you have seen $220 on older pages, that was the previous fee. Some ETS regional pages, such as the Korean fees page, still show $220 in their table next to a note that the General Test fee rose to $249 from 1 August 2026 for registrations completed on or after that date.

ETS doesn't list a separate registration fee: the $249 is what you pay to register for and sit the test, apart from the online service fee explained below. It also covers sending your scores to up to four programmes on test day. For a wider breakdown of what a GRE attempt costs, read our guide to how much the GRE costs.

ETS says its fees are subject to change without notice. Check the ETS fees page on the day you book, and read the total on the checkout screen before you pay.

Paying the GRE fee in Indian rupees

ETS prices the GRE in US dollars, and its fee page for India doesn't currently show a rupee figure. What you pay in rupees therefore depends on how you pay. The 2026–27 GRE Information Bulletin says that when you register online, you may be given the option to pay in the local currency supported by your card issuer or in USD.

If your card asks for a 3-D Secure code during payment and you can't enter it, the Bulletin says the payment will be rejected and you'll need to contact your bank. It's worth checking with your bank beforehand that your card will go through.

Extra GRE fees: rescheduling, score reports and reviews

Most students only pay the test fee, but it helps to know the extras before you book. ETS lists these fees in US dollars on its fee page:

GRE service fees outside China (ETS fees page, accessed 1 October 2026)
ServiceFee
Rescheduling your testUS$55
Changing your test centreUS$55
Additional Score Report, per recipientUS$40
Score Review for Analytical WritingUS$60
Score ReinstatementUS$50
Question-and-Answer review (New York State residents only)US$50

ETS adds that any scoring service not on that list, such as the GRE Diagnostic Service, has no fee. The Bulletin also says that the final charge for transactions includes a non-refundable 4% online service fee, so the amount taken from your account can be higher than the listed fee.

Fee reductions. ETS's need-based and unemployment vouchers are for US citizens or resident aliens planning to test in the United States and its territories. ETS also gives vouchers to a list of partner programmes, including the EducationUSA Opportunity Fund Program, which students get through their programme coordinator. Voucher holders pay US$100 for the General Test.

Is GST added to the GRE fee in India?

ETS's fee pages don't mention GST by name. Its tax note says test and test-related fees are inclusive of any sales, use, value-added or similar taxes. It then lists the places where tax is added on top when you place your order: Australia, Canada, Colombia, the 27 EU countries, Nigeria, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Turkey, the United States and Vietnam. India is not on that list.

The same note says that where a test taker is required to account for local taxes themselves, paying those taxes is the test taker's responsibility. The safest approach is to read the final amount on the checkout screen, which includes the 4% online service fee.

Sending scores and using ScoreSelect

On test day you can name up to four graduate programmes or fellowship sponsors to receive your scores as part of your test fee. With the ScoreSelect option you choose whether each of those four free reports sends your Most Recent scores or All your scores from the last five years. You can also choose not to send scores that day.

After test day, each extra report costs US$40 per recipient. Reports ordered later can use a third option, Any, which lets you pick one or more specific test dates. ETS says it takes about five business days to process a request. If you are applying to more than four programmes, our guide to sending GRE scores with ScoreSelect explains how to plan so you pay for as few extra reports as possible.

GRE exam centres in India or taking it at home

ETS runs the GRE General Test at more than 1,000 test centres in 160+ countries and says that in most regions the test is available on a continuous basis throughout the year. The only places it names as having limited dates are mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea. ETS doesn't publish a list of Indian cities on its fee or location pages; to see centres near you, use the search on ETS's GRE scheduling page, where you enter your city or postal code and see open dates.

The at-home GRE is offered everywhere the test is normally available, based on the country of your account address, and it runs around the clock, seven days a week. ETS's fee table has one General Test price per location, with no separate at-home price, so in India both options cost US$249.

The at-home requirements come from ETS's at-home testing page. If your computer and room don't meet them on the day, ETS says you won't be able to test and won't get a refund or a free reschedule. Not sure the GRE is the right exam for you? Our GRE vs GMAT comparison can help you decide.

ID you need for the GRE in India

Select India on ETS's ID requirements page and it lists one acceptable primary ID for Indian citizens testing in India: a passport with your name, photograph and signature. If you test outside your country of citizenship, ETS says you must present a valid passport and that there are no exceptions to this policy.

How to register for the GRE in India

  1. Create an ETS account. The Bulletin says you need an ETS account to register online, and it's also where you see scores and order extra reports later.
  2. Choose a test centre or testing at home, then search dates on the GRE scheduling page. Register online at least two calendar days before your preferred date.
  3. Pay the US$249 fee by card or PayPal, and check the final total, including the 4% online service fee.
  4. Before test day, check your passport. If you are testing at home, run the equipment check and complete ID verification at least 72 hours ahead.
  5. On test day, choose up to four free score recipients and your ScoreSelect option.

Rescheduling and cancelling. You must reschedule no later than four days before your test date, or you lose the test fee, and rescheduling costs US$55. Cancelling at least four days before normally gets you a refund of half the test fee, but the Bulletin tells test takers in India to check the refund terms on the ETS India website.

Retakes. You can take the General Test once every 21 days, up to five times in any rolling 12-month period, and you'll get your score report 8–10 days after your test. Pick a date that leaves time for both; our GRE test dates guide helps you plan around application deadlines.

Help in India. ETS India's GRE support team is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. India Standard Time, seven days a week, except local holidays. You can email GRESupport4India@ets.org or call the toll-free number +18001200371.

Make the fee count. At US$249 a sitting, it pays to know where you stand before you book. Check what a good GRE score is for your target programmes, then try our free GRE practice questions to see how close you are. When you're ready to study properly, the GRE General Test hub has the full course.
