GRE to GMAT score conversion: what the official tools say

There is no single GRE-to-GMAT number, but ETS and GMAC each publish an official tool. How the ETS comparison tool and the GMAC concordance table work — and why a predicted score isn't a promised one.

There isn't one magic number

The GRE and GMAT use different scales for different exams, so there is no exact one-to-one conversion. The GRE reports Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning on a 130–170 scale in 1-point increments (accessed 2026-08-07); the GMAT Focus Edition reports a Total Score on a 205–805 scale (accessed 2026-08-07), a different scale from the classic GMAT's 200–800. What you can get is an official estimate.

The ETS comparison tool

ETS publishes a GRE Comparison Tool for Business Schools (accessed 2026-08-07) that predicts a GMAT score from your GRE Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning scores. Admissions offices use it to read a GRE score on a scale they already know. It gives you a ballpark for where your GRE would land as a GMAT number — useful when you're deciding which test to submit.

GMAT-to-GMAT: the concordance table

If your confusion is between the classic GMAT and the GMAT Focus Edition rather than the GRE, GMAC publishes a concordance table that maps classic GMAT total scores to GMAT Focus Edition total scores (accessed 2026-08-07). A 650 on the old scale does not mean 650 on the new one, and the table is the official way to translate between them.

Treat a predicted score as a range

A predicted or concordant score is a statistical estimate, not a guarantee of how you'd actually perform on the other exam. Use it to compare your standing and to choose a test — not as a substitute for taking the one your programs weight most. When a target score matters, prep for the exam you'll actually sit.
