Concise answer
Critical reasoning questions hand you a short argument and assign you a job. The anatomy is always the same — stated premises, an often unstated assumption, a conclusion — and the four common jobs impose different standards: strengthen and weaken options only need to move the argument's support, a necessary assumption must be indispensable (the negation test checks this), and an inference must be true given the statements, not merely plausible.
Definitions
- Premise
- A reason offered in support of a conclusion; the evidence half of an argument's two components.
- Conclusion
- What the arguer wants you to believe — the claim the premises exist to support, often flagged by 'therefore', 'hence', 'clearly', or 'so'.
- Assumption
- An unstated premise the argument depends on; arguers do not always state all of their reasons, and assumption questions ask you to name the missing one.
- Negation test
- A check for necessity: negate the candidate assumption and reread the argument — collapse means the assumption was required, survival means it was not.
- Inference (must-be-true) standard
- The deductive standard inference questions impose: the credited option follows from the statements themselves, not from plausibility or outside knowledge.
Intuition
Picture the argument as a bridge: stated premises anchor one bank, the conclusion sits on the other, and the assumption is the unseen middle pillar. Weaken questions attack the pillar, strengthen questions reinforce it, and assumption questions ask you to name it — three jobs on one anatomy.
The jobs differ in burden of proof, and the deductive/inductive divide explains why: a strengthener only has to make the conclusion more probable (inductive support), while an inference answer must be guaranteed by the statements (deductive support). Most trap options are answers to the wrong job — a fine strengthener offered where necessity was demanded.
Concept walkthrough
The GMAT's Verbal Reasoning section — 45 minutes, 23 questions on GMAC's exam-structure page — assesses critical reasoning and reading comprehension. Critical reasoning items are short arguments, and arguments have exactly two stated components: premises, the reasons offered, and the conclusion, the claim those reasons are meant to make you accept. Find the conclusion first; indicator words like 'therefore' and 'hence' flag it when they appear, and when they do not, ask what the passage is trying to make you accept. Everything that is not the conclusion or background is evidence.
Because arguers do not state all of their reasons, real arguments lean on unstated assumptions, and that gap is where the question jobs live. Strengthen options add support for the conclusion; weaken options attack the link between premises and conclusion (rarely the premises themselves); assumption questions demand the unstated premise the argument cannot live without; inference questions reverse the direction and ask what the statements themselves establish. Reading the stem before the options and naming the job keeps a well-written strengthener from being credited where an assumption was demanded.
Two tools settle the hardest cases. The negation test operationalizes necessity: negate a candidate assumption — carefully, so 'all' becomes 'not all' rather than 'none' — and reread the argument; collapse proves necessity, survival proves the option was decoration. The deductive/inductive distinction disciplines inference questions: deductive inferences are guaranteed by the structure of what is stated, inductive ones are only probable, and inference questions credit the guaranteed option. An option that is very likely true, consistent with the passage, or true in the real world still fails the standard if the statements do not force it.

Worked example
Running the negation test on a bike-lane argument
Argument: 'After Riverton opened a protected bike lane on Main Street, weekday car counts on Main Street fell by 8 percent. Clearly, the lane converted drivers into cyclists.' Identify the conclusion and one stated premise, then use the negation test on the candidate assumption: 'The drop in Main Street car counts was not caused by drivers rerouting to parallel streets.'
- 1Find the conclusion via its indicator word 'clearly': the lane converted drivers into cyclists.
- 2Name the stated premise: weekday car counts on Main Street fell 8 percent after the lane opened.
- 3Locate the gap: the premise measures cars on one street, while the conclusion claims a change in how people travel — the argument needs the drop to reflect mode-switching rather than route-switching.
- 4Negate the candidate: 'The drop WAS caused by drivers rerouting to parallel streets.' Under this negation the 8 percent figure says nothing about anyone taking up cycling.
- 5Read the verdict: the argument collapses under negation, so the candidate is a necessary assumption. Contrast a strengthener such as 'bicycle counts on Main Street rose over the same period' — it adds support, but the argument survives its negation, so it is not necessary.
Conclusion: the lane converted drivers into cyclists; premise: the 8 percent drop in Main Street car counts. The rerouting statement is a necessary assumption — its negation destroys the argument — while the rising-bicycle-counts statement is only a strengthener.
Common traps
- Mislabeling a premise as the conclusion when no indicator word appears — ask what the passage wants you to accept, not which sentence sounds most important.
- Crediting a strong strengthener on a necessary-assumption question; the negation test exists precisely to catch this.
- Choosing inference options that are plausible or consistent with the passage instead of guaranteed by it.
- Negating to the polar opposite instead of the denial — the negation of 'all commuters drive' is 'not all commuters drive', not 'no commuters drive'.
- Falling for out-of-scope comparisons that import alternatives, populations, or time periods the argument never mentions.
