GAMSAT UK Medical Schools: Which Use It and Cut-offs

ACER lists 15 UK universities using GAMSAT for 2027 entry. See each school's own GAMSAT rules and the cut-off scores schools publish, with years.

Published Sources last checked

For 2027 entry, ACER lists 15 UK universities whose courses use GAMSAT through UCAS, including Exeter, Plymouth, Keele, Liverpool, City St George's, Swansea, Ulster and the ScotGEM programme run by St Andrews and Dundee (ACER). Only some publish a GAMSAT number; for example, City St George's admissions statistics page (as saved in August 2026) shows it required an overall 56 in its 2026 cycle.

Which UK medical schools use GAMSAT?

ACER, which runs the test, publishes the official list of UK courses that take GAMSAT. These are the programmes it lists for applications through UCAS for 2027 entry:

University of SunderlandA100S84
University of SurreyA101S85
Swansea UniversityA101S93
Ulster UniversityA101U20
University of WorcesterA101W80

ACER also lists the MSc Physician Associate Studies at UEA, which you apply to directly rather than through UCAS. The list mixes graduate-entry courses (mostly coded A101) with standard-entry courses (mostly A100) that accept GAMSAT for graduates or for applicants without the usual A levels. Always check how your course uses it.

ACER's basic rules for these programmes: you usually need, or be predicted, at least an upper second class honours degree in any subject, and most places are for home students. ACER notes exceptions that accept international students: Liverpool A100, Swansea A101, Ulster A101 and Worcester A101. For a full explanation of the test itself, see our GAMSAT guide.

GAMSAT cut-off scores published by UK schools

ACER does not set a pass mark. It says universities set their own cut-off scores from year to year and look at section and overall scores, not percentiles. Below is every number we found on a school's own official page. Scores are out of 100. City St George's and Ulster block automated checks, so for those two we used copies saved by the Wayback Machine.

GAMSAT scores published on UK schools' own pages
SchoolWhat the school publishesYear

Pears CumbriaMinimum total 59 (home), 53 (contextual)2026 entry
PlymouthOverall threshold 52; sections 43, 43 and 482024 entry
ScotGEMUnweighted overall 50, no section below 42, to be called to interview2025 entry
SwanseaMinimum considered: 50 overall and 50 in Paper 32026 entry
UlsterAt least 50 in each section, plus an overall interview threshold set each year2027/28 entry page (archived April 2026)
Keele55 overall with 58 in section III, or 58 overall with 55 in section III; 50+ in other sectionsCurrent page
Sunderland55 overall with 58 in section III, or 58 overall with 55 in section III; no section below 50Current page
LiverpoolAt least 50 in each sub-component (A101)2026 entry

Keele and Sunderland's figures are minimums for applicants who use GAMSAT in place of A level or GCSE requirements (Keele also asks these applicants to sit the UCAT). Swansea and Ulster's figures are entry minimums; the actual interview cut-off is set each year from the applications received.

These are past or minimum figures, not targets. City St George's says it is not possible to predict future thresholds from earlier years, and ScotGEM says it cannot advise on scores for 2027 entry. Check each school's page for the current cycle before you apply.

City St George's and Plymouth: GAMSAT cut-offs over time

Two schools publish several years of results, which shows how much cut-offs move. City St George's ranks every eligible applicant by GAMSAT score; its course page for 2026 entry said it had interviewed about 240 to 280 applicants in previous years. Its admissions statistics page (saved in August 2026) gives the overall scores it required for home graduates:

Plymouth's medicine page lists the thresholds applied in previous admissions cycles. For GAMSAT applicants, the test is the only academic qualification used at shortlisting.

Schools that don't publish a GAMSAT cut-off

Several schools on ACER's list explain how they use GAMSAT but give no number:

When a school doesn't publish a cut-off, the safest reading is that a higher score is always better, and section minimums still apply where stated.

Which GAMSAT results count for 2027 entry?

ACER says results from March 2025, September 2025, March 2026 and September 2026 can be used to apply in 2026 for courses starting in 2027. Schools can be stricter or more generous:

You must also tell ACER you are a UK applicant, with your UCAS Personal ID and course choices, by midnight GMT on 31 October 2026. For 2027 entry, ACER's timeline shows interviews from December 2026 to April 2027 and offers from March to June 2027.

GAMSAT or UCAT?

Standard-entry medicine courses for school leavers generally use the UCAT rather than GAMSAT. Several schools above (UEA, Surrey, Pears Cumbria, Swansea, Chester, Brunel and Worcester) accept either test for some applicants, so check which one your degree and course allow before booking.

To see what the other test involves, read what's on the UCAT, visit our UCAT overview, or try a free UCAT practice test. Our GAMSAT overview has the basics of the graduate route in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Which UK universities accept GAMSAT?

For 2027 entry ACER lists Brunel, Chester, Exeter, UEA, Pears Cumbria, Keele, Liverpool, Plymouth, St Andrews and Dundee (ScotGEM), City St George's, Sunderland, Surrey, Swansea, Ulster and Worcester.

What GAMSAT score do I need for medicine in the UK?

It depends on the school and year. Published figures include an overall 56 at City St George's (2026 cycle), 59 at Pears Cumbria for home applicants (2026 entry) and 52 at Plymouth (2024 entry). Many schools set the cut-off each year and publish no number.

Is 60 a good GAMSAT score?

It depends on the school. An overall 60 met City St George's required score in every cycle from 2023 to 2026 and Pears Cumbria's 2026 home threshold of 59, but it was below Plymouth's overall threshold in 2019 to 2023 (61 to 66). Section minimums still apply, and cut-offs change each year.

Can international students use GAMSAT for UK medicine?

Most GAMSAT courses in the UK are for home students only. ACER lists Liverpool A100, Swansea A101, Ulster A101 and Worcester A101 as exceptions; check each university's own international entry page.
