Social Psychology, Motivation, and Emotion: Domain Guide

The social domain of the GRE Psychology Test in one place: attribution and its biases, dissonance and persuasion, conformity and obedience, group processes and bystander intervention, and the competing theories of motivation and emotion.

Concise answer

Social psychology has one governing claim: situations explain more of behaviour than observers expect, and observers systematically fail to notice it. Everything else in the domain is a specific version of that claim — attribution biases describe the failure itself, conformity and obedience studies quantify the situation's power, group processes show what changes when other people are present, and dissonance describes what happens inside a person whose behaviour has outrun their attitude. Motivation and emotion sit alongside as the question of what starts behaviour and what it feels like, answered by a small set of rival theories distinguished mainly by ordering.

Definitions

Fundamental attribution error
Over-weighting disposition and under-weighting situation when explaining someone else's behaviour. It is an error about others; explanations of one's own behaviour tilt the other way.
Self-serving bias
Attributing one's own successes to internal causes and one's own failures to external ones. It protects self-esteem and is the mirror image of how the same person explains others.
Cognitive dissonance
The discomfort of holding an attitude and a behaviour that conflict. It is reduced by changing the attitude, and the change is largest when there is least external justification for the behaviour.
Normative and informational influence
Conforming to be accepted (normative) versus conforming because others are treated as a source of information about reality (informational). Ambiguity of the task points to informational; public response points to normative.
Diffusion of responsibility
The reduction in each individual's felt obligation to act as the number of others present increases. It explains both the bystander effect and social loafing.
Social facilitation
The presence of others strengthens the dominant response, which improves performance on easy or well-practised tasks and impairs it on difficult or novel ones.
Group polarisation
Discussion among like-minded people moves the group's average position further in the direction it already leaned. It is intensification, not compromise.
Groupthink
A cohesive group's suppression of dissent in favour of consensus, producing poor decisions through incomplete consideration of alternatives.

Intuition

The attribution biases are one asymmetry seen from two sides. When you explain someone else's behaviour, you see the person and not their circumstances, so you reach for disposition. When you explain your own, you see the circumstances vividly because you were inside them, so you reach for the situation — and when the outcome is flattering you reach back for disposition after all. Holding the asymmetry as 'whose behaviour is being explained, and did it go well?' answers most attribution items directly.

Dissonance runs on the size of the excuse. If you were paid handsomely to say something you do not believe, you have a ready explanation for your behaviour and nothing to resolve; if you did it for almost nothing, the only remaining way to make sense of it is to decide you half-believed it. This is why the counterintuitive prediction — smaller incentive, larger attitude change — is the one the test asks about, and why the large-incentive condition is the correct comparison rather than a control.

Group effects divide neatly by whether the task allows individual contributions to be identified. When performance is visible and evaluated, the presence of others is arousing and strengthens whatever response is already dominant. When contributions are pooled and anonymous, effort drops instead. Asking 'can this person's contribution be picked out?' distinguishes social facilitation from social loafing more reliably than remembering which study is which.

Concept walkthrough

Attribution is the domain's entry point. Explanations of behaviour are either internal, pointing to something about the person, or external, pointing to something about the situation. Kelley's covariation model supplies the systematic version: consensus asks whether other people behave the same way in this situation, distinctiveness asks whether this person behaves this way only in this situation, and consistency asks whether the person behaves this way whenever the situation recurs. High consensus with high distinctiveness and high consistency points to the situation; low consensus with low distinctiveness and high consistency points to the person; low consistency points to circumstance. Layered on top are the biases — the fundamental attribution error when explaining others, the actor–observer asymmetry, the self-serving bias when explaining oneself, and the just-world belief that leads observers to infer that victims must somehow have deserved their outcomes.

Attitudes and behaviour influence each other in both directions. Attitudes predict behaviour best when they are specific to the behaviour, strongly held, and formed through direct experience, and when situational pressures are weak. In the other direction, behaviour changes attitudes through cognitive dissonance: acting against one's stated position creates discomfort that is resolved by shifting the position — most strongly when the external justification for acting was small, since a large reward or a strong threat already explains the behaviour and leaves nothing to resolve. Effort justification is the same mechanism applied to costly initiations. Self-perception theory offers a rival account in which people simply infer their attitudes from observing their own behaviour, without any discomfort required.

Persuasion is organised by route. Central-route processing evaluates the substance of the argument and requires both motivation and ability to think it through; it produces attitude change that lasts and resists counterargument. Peripheral-route processing relies on cues such as the communicator's attractiveness, credibility, or the sheer number of arguments, and it produces change that is easier to obtain and easier to undo. The practical implication the test likes is that an audience that cares and can concentrate is moved by argument quality, while a distracted or uninvolved audience is moved by cues. Compliance techniques exploit sequence rather than content: foot-in-the-door starts with a small request to make a larger one likelier, door-in-the-face starts with an unreasonable request so that the real one appears as a concession, and lowballing secures agreement before revealing the true cost.

Conformity and obedience are the domain's best-known findings and its best source of boundary-condition items. In the line-judgement paradigm a substantial minority of judgements followed an obviously wrong unanimous majority, and the variable that mattered most was unanimity: a single dissenting ally sharply reduced conformity, while adding more majority members beyond a small group added little. Conformity also rose when responses were public rather than private and when the task was ambiguous — the first pointing to normative influence, the second to informational. In the obedience paradigm a majority of participants continued to the maximum shock level under the instruction of an experimenter, and obedience fell when the authority figure was physically distant, when the institutional setting was less prestigious, when the victim was closer, and when a peer refused first. Every one of those variables is a possible item, and the headline percentage is rarely the point.

The presence of other people changes performance in several distinguishable ways. Social facilitation is arousal from being observed strengthening the dominant response, so simple or well-learned tasks improve while difficult or novel ones deteriorate. Social loafing is reduced individual effort when contributions are pooled and cannot be identified. Deindividuation is the loss of self-awareness and personal accountability in a group, which loosens ordinary restraints. Group polarisation is the movement of a group's position further in the direction it already favoured after discussion, and it is worth stating explicitly that groups do not tend to average their members' views. Groupthink is the specific failure of cohesive decision-making groups under a directive leader, where the desire for unanimity suppresses dissent and alternatives go unexamined.

Helping behaviour has its own analysis. The bystander effect is the finding that an individual is less likely to help as the number of other bystanders grows, and it is explained by diffusion of responsibility together with pluralistic ignorance, in which each bystander reads the others' inaction as evidence that nothing is wrong. The decision sequence is worth memorising as a chain that can break at any link: notice the event, interpret it as an emergency, assume personal responsibility, know what form of help to give, and then decide to act. Items typically describe a failure and ask which link broke. Explanations of why people help at all divide between reciprocity and kin-based accounts, egoistic accounts in which helping reduces the helper's own distress, and empathy-based accounts in which the helper's concern is for the other.

Prejudice is analysed as the affective component of an intergroup attitude, stereotyping as its cognitive component, and discrimination as its behavioural component — a three-part split that items exploit by describing one and offering the others. In-group favouritism and out-group homogeneity bias arise readily even from arbitrary group assignment. The contact hypothesis holds that intergroup contact reduces prejudice under conditions including equal status, common goals, cooperation, and institutional support, and the classic summer-camp studies are cited for the effectiveness of superordinate goals that neither group can achieve alone.

Motivation and emotion complete the domain. Drive-reduction accounts explain behaviour as the restoration of homeostasis and struggle with behaviour that raises arousal; optimal arousal accounts add the Yerkes–Dodson relation, in which performance is best at a moderate level of arousal, with the optimum lower for difficult tasks and higher for simple ones. Maslow's hierarchy orders physiological needs, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualisation, with lower needs claimed to take precedence. The intrinsic–extrinsic distinction matters because extrinsic reward can undermine intrinsic interest. For emotion, four theories are distinguished purely by ordering: James–Lange places the bodily response first and treats emotion as the perception of it; Cannon–Bard has the bodily response and the emotional experience occur together rather than one causing the other; Schachter–Singer's two-factor theory requires undifferentiated arousal plus a cognitive label drawn from the situation, which predicts that identical arousal can be experienced as different emotions; and appraisal theories place the cognitive evaluation first. The facial feedback hypothesis is the related claim that expressions feed back into experience.

Assumptions

  • All three dimensions are needed; two of them are compatible with either conclusion.
  • Low consistency undermines any stable attribution and points to a one-off circumstance.

Dissonance magnitude rule

smaller external justification for counterattitudinal behaviour => larger attitude change

Variables

  • external justification: payment, threat, or any reason that explains the behaviour without belief
  • attitude change: movement of the stated attitude towards the behaviour

Assumptions

  • The behaviour must feel freely chosen; coerced behaviour produces little dissonance.
  • The prediction is counterintuitive by design: a large reward gives an explanation and therefore removes the pressure to change.

Influence type diagnostic

  • Both can operate at once; the diagnostic is which feature the stem emphasises.

Assumptions

  • Social facilitation improves performance only when the dominant response is correct — that is, on easy or well-practised tasks.
  • Group polarisation intensifies the pre-existing lean; it does not move a group towards the middle.

Bystander decision chain

Variables

  • diffusion of responsibility: the third link weakens as the number of bystanders grows

Assumptions

  • The effect is driven by the number of other bystanders, not by indifference in the individual.
  • Naming a single victim or a single bystander reverses the effect by restoring personal responsibility.

Emotion theories by ordering

James-Lange: stimulus -> bodily response -> emotion; Cannon-Bard: stimulus -> bodily response and emotion together; Schachter-Singer: stimulus -> arousal -> cognitive label -> emotion; appraisal: stimulus -> evaluation -> emotion and arousal

Variables

  • arousal: undifferentiated physiological activation
  • label: the situational interpretation applied to that arousal

Assumptions

  • The theories are distinguished by sequence, so items describe a sequence and ask which theory it matches.
  • Two-factor theory is the one that predicts misattribution: the same arousal can be experienced as a different emotion if the available label changes.

Yerkes–Dodson relation

performance is highest at moderate arousal; the optimum is lower for difficult tasks and higher for simple ones

Assumptions

  • The relation is an inverted U, so both too little and too much arousal impair performance.
  • Task difficulty shifts the peak; quoting a single optimal level for all tasks is the standard error.

Worked example

Which theory of emotion does misattributed arousal support?

Participants are given an injection they are told is a vitamin. Some are told to expect side effects of a racing heart and trembling hands; others are told to expect nothing. All are then placed with a confederate who behaves either euphorically or angrily. Participants who were warned about the side effects report little emotion, while those who were not warned report feeling euphoric or angry to match the confederate. Which theory of emotion does this pattern support, and why do the others fail to predict it?

  1. 1Extract the two manipulations. One is whether an explanation for the arousal is available; the other is what emotional interpretation the social situation makes salient. The physiological state itself is the same in every condition.
  2. 2Test James–Lange. It holds that a distinct bodily pattern produces the corresponding emotion — the feeling is the perception of the body. Since the bodily state is identical across conditions, this theory predicts the same emotion everywhere. It cannot explain why the reported emotion tracks the confederate.
  3. 3Test Cannon–Bard. It holds that arousal and emotional experience are triggered together by the stimulus rather than one causing the other, so it also has no mechanism by which an explanation offered in advance would remove the emotion. It fails on the first manipulation.
  4. 4Test appraisal theory in its strong form. If evaluation of the stimulus comes first and generates both the arousal and the emotion, then the injection — evaluated as harmless — should generate no emotion at all in any condition, which is not what the uninformed participants report.
  5. 5Test Schachter–Singer. It requires two ingredients: undifferentiated arousal, and a cognitive label for it taken from the available situation. Participants who were warned already have a label — the injection — so the arousal is explained and no emotion is constructed.
  6. 6Apply the same theory to the uninformed group. They have arousal and no explanation for it, so they search the situation and adopt the label the confederate's behaviour supplies. Identical arousal is therefore experienced as euphoria in one room and anger in another.
  7. 7Confirm that the pattern matches both manipulations. The informed/uninformed contrast is explained by whether a label was already available, and the euphoric/angry contrast is explained by which label the situation supplied. Only the two-factor account predicts both.
  8. 8Generalise the transferable point. Any finding in which the same physiological state yields different reported emotions depending on the situation is evidence for a labelling stage between arousal and experience, which is exactly what the two-factor theory adds to its predecessors.

The pattern supports Schachter–Singer two-factor theory: emotion requires arousal plus a cognitive label, so an already-explained arousal produces little emotion while an unexplained arousal takes its label from the situation. James–Lange and Cannon–Bard both predict the same emotion regardless of the explanation offered, and a strict appraisal account predicts no emotion at all.

Common traps

  • Applying the fundamental attribution error to explanations of one's own behaviour. It describes how observers explain others; self-explanations tilt towards the situation, and towards disposition only when the outcome is flattering.
  • Predicting that a larger reward produces a larger attitude change. Dissonance predicts the reverse for freely chosen counterattitudinal behaviour, because a large reward already justifies it.
  • Assuming conformity keeps rising with group size. It plateaus quickly; the decisive variable is unanimity, and one ally sharply reduces it.
  • Explaining the bystander effect by apathy. It is produced by the number of others present through diffusion of responsibility and pluralistic ignorance, not by indifference.
  • Saying that an audience improves performance. It strengthens the dominant response, which helps only when the dominant response is the correct one.
  • Treating group polarisation as compromise. Discussion among like-minded people moves the average further out, not towards the middle.
  • Using 'groupthink' for any bad group decision. It specifically involves a cohesive group suppressing dissent in pursuit of unanimity.
  • Confusing normative with informational influence. Ambiguity and genuine belief change point to informational; public responding and outward compliance point to normative.
  • Confusing prejudice, stereotype, and discrimination. They are the affective, cognitive, and behavioural components respectively, and items often describe one and offer the others.
  • Quoting one optimal arousal level for all tasks. The Yerkes–Dodson optimum is lower for difficult tasks and higher for simple ones.
  • Distinguishing emotion theories by content rather than by ordering. All four accept that arousal and cognition are involved; they disagree only about sequence and dependence.
