The mistakes GRE subject-test questions are built to catch.

A wrong answer on a subject test is not noise. Somebody wrote it, and wrote it to be chosen by a particular piece of muddled thinking. This page names 84 of those mistakes and counts how often the wrong answers in our own GRE Physics, Mathematics, and Psychology question bank were written to catch each one.

Read this first: what these numbers are, and what they are not

This is a classification of authored intent. Every practice item in our three GRE subject-test banks records, for each wrong option it offers, the specific error that would lead a student to pick it. This page counts those records. When it says an error accounts for 1,673 wrong answers, it means 1,673 wrong answers in this bank were written to catch it. That is a fact about how the questions were written and about nothing else.

It is not measured student performance. Nothing here comes from watching anyone take a test. There is no study, no sample, no analytics behind these figures. We are not claiming that any of these mistakes is common among real candidates, that any share of test-takers makes it, or that it costs anyone points. Those would be different claims needing different evidence, and we do not have that evidence.

The counts describe this question bank. They are the shape of one prep provider's writing across 2,509 items — its habits, its coverage, and its blind spots included. A different bank written against the same syllabus would produce different numbers. Nothing here describes the real exams, their item pool, or their design. Keiko Study is independent of ETS, and this page carries no endorsement from ETS or any other exam owner.

It is not finished and it is not validated. The list of 84 errors is what we have needed so far to name every wrong answer we have written; a longer bank would need more names. Nobody outside Keiko Study has reviewed it, and it has not been checked against any external dataset. We publish it because a stable, named vocabulary for wrong answers is more useful shared than kept, and because something written down can be argued with.

How the taxonomy was built

Writing a multiple-choice question is mostly writing the wrong answers. A distractor that nobody would pick is wasted; a good one is the exact output of a specific misunderstanding, so that choosing it tells you something. Our authoring model makes that explicit. Each item carries a set of rules, and a rule ties one offered wrong answer to one named error from a fixed list. Where an option is filler that no real reasoning produces, it is deliberately left unnamed rather than given a label that would not be true.

Across the three GRE subject tests that is 2,509 items carrying 9,279 named causes, drawn from 84 distinct errors. Each of the 84 has a stable code you can cite, a plain-language description, and a mapping onto one of four broader categories. The page you are reading is generated from that model on every deploy: no figure on it is typed by hand, and adding a question to the bank changes the numbers here without anyone editing this page.

One name is chosen per wrong answer, not several. Real mistakes are not always so tidy — a student can misread a condition and then misapply a rule — but a single named cause is what the model can support honestly, so that is what it records.

The shape of the list

The interesting split is not between subjects. It is between the errors that belong to a subject and the errors that belong to reading a question at speed. Thirteen of the 84 names are used by all three subject tests; the rest appear in exactly one.

Counted by names, the subject-specific errors dominate. Counted by wrong answers, the shared ones do — the thirteen cross-exam names account for 5,307 of the 9,279 named causes in the bank. Reaching for a neighbouring definition, dropping a stated condition, and running a relationship the wrong way are not physics problems or psychology problems. They are what goes wrong when somebody who does know the material answers too quickly.

Four categories, and why the split matters

Every named error maps onto one of four broader codes. The distribution is the single most useful thing on this page for anyone deciding how to spend study time.

55 of the 84 names are conceptual — the student has the wrong idea about what something is or how it behaves. Only 6 are about executing a calculation. If you are deciding between drilling arithmetic accuracy and rebuilding the concepts underneath it, the questions themselves were mostly written for the second problem. That is a fact about the questions, not a measurement of your own error rate — but if you are choosing what to practise blind, it is the better bet.

Errors that are not about the subject

These 13 names are used by items in all three subject tests. A physics item and a psychology item have almost nothing in common, so when the same name explains a wrong answer in both, the mistake is not really about physics or psychology. It is about how a question gets read, how a relationship gets carried, and what gets dropped under time pressure.

That is the part of this list a tutor can use across subjects, and the part a student can work on without knowing any more content than they already do.

Restate every condition the prompt gives in your own words, then check the option you chose still obeys all of them. The conditions are usually what makes one plausible answer wrong.

Write the relationship as a proportionality before you compute, and decide from it whether the answer should get larger or smaller. Direction is a separate decision from magnitude, so make it separately.

Test the boundary point itself and see whether it belongs. Whether the inequality is strict is usually the whole question.
